Lo-Fi Songs: An Alternative to Keep Productive

Perspective Monday, 30 November 2020

Sometimes when we are planning to be productive, there seems to be a huge wall that feels  like a barrier that stands in the way. It feels like everything is not possible, this work is too much, laziness and pessimistic feelings creeping up from our legs. Evidently a lot of people also feels the  same. But then, how do we overcome that?

A lot of people in the working age such as teens, college students, and even working  professionals experienced that feeling. Some found their productive tempo by using songs, a  change of the atmosphere, or even putting white noises to keep focusing.

When I feel so miserably like that, I usually goes to the YouTube live of lofi hip hop radio  – beats to relax/study to. There, you can also find many other people in the comment section that  had shared their experiences in life. It has become sort of a community where some strangers support another stranger without knowing much of their background. The beats of the Lo-Fi songs  also create a sense of nostalgia and relax.

lofi hip hop radio – beats to relax/study to, the girl we have always known in the Chillhop’s live youtube channel.

What is a Lo-Fi?

The word Lo-Fi comes from the term “Low-Fidelity” which has the reference to the sounds  of vinyl crackle. “Low-Fidelity” itself means the electronic reproduction of sound or images using  technology that results in unwanted distortion or imperfection. Rather than thriving for perfection,  Lo-Fi introduce us to embrace our imperfection as a unique human being and just go with it.

With slowed songs, repetitive tone, hums, background noise, limited sound wave  amplitude yet still unique in a way, Lo-Fi songs are widely used by students all across the world  to help them study, relax, focus, and even sleeping. In most cases Lo-Fi can be a genre that turns songs that you hate into the song that you love.

The history of Lo-Fi

Many Japanese artist, pianist, and jazz artists found the entire groundwork of this relatively  new genre. As you can already notice a lot of Lo-Fi channels in YouTube are putting some  Japanese aesthetic animation into the background. Some series of anime from Japan deeply  influenced this genre such as Nujabes in his work Samurai Champloo and Joe Hisashi’s works in  Studio Ghibli’s soundtrack movies.

There is even a singer and composer that only focused on producing Lo-Fi songs such as  Keshi or Casey Luong. Keshi is a Vietnam-American singer living in Houston, United States. Even  though he does not like to be classified as a Lo-Fi artist, his works was very much a nostalgic  fusion of jazz or R&B samples with very raw, and old-sounding hip-hop beats that are good for  setting a mood.

The new emerging genre of Lo-Fi in the society is like a utopia. This world has moved on  for too fast, and Lo-Fi songs is here to tell us that everything is okay and eventually things would  work out. Lo-Fi songs also give the sense of having a nice soundtrack into our world. It gives us  the sense of just living and existing in this world.

Burmese Snacks that You Should Try

Perspective Monday, 30 November 2020

When you travel to a country, you will definitely not only visit the unique, unusual and famous places of this country but also try to eat the traditional cuisine, snacks and drinks. Well, I have heard that some foreigners travel around the world to taste the regional food of its country. There is no doubt that traditional food can prove the customs and traditions of a country. The main food of Myanmar is rice so that most of the local snacks are made from rice and glutinous rice. Some of these are traditionally aromatic and lightly-prepared food. Burmese people used to cook snacks with a delicate balance of spices and seasoning by stir-frying, streaming, or boiling. I would like to mention unpopular but delicious Burmese snacks that you should try when you explore Myanmar.

  1. Darby-and-Joan Myanmar mini pancakes (Mont-lin-ma-yar). Mont-lin-ma-yar is a popular snack sold at the food stalls of pagoda festivals and it is famous street snack with a unusual name. Literally, the word means husband-and-wife pancakes. The main ingredient of it is rice. It is made from rice batter in the form of two small hemispheres, each facing the other forming a romantic couple. It is eaten with roasted sesame powder with salt and boiled green peas. Some people add coconut milk in batter and some prepare mini pancakes with a quail egg in each hemisphere. Mont-lin-mayar is not costly and it is really nutritious.
  2. Myanmar Pancake (Bein-mont). Bein-mont serves with either tea or coffee and it is a very common breakfast which enjoys by people from rural and urban areas in Myanmar. Myanmar pancake is made from rice flour, palm sugar, eggs, coconuts chips, peanuts, garnished with poppy seeds. Some Bein-mont bakers use butter instead of oil to make it more delicious.
  3. Mont Bine Taunt. I grew up eating Mont Bine Taunt and it is my childhood favourite snack. It is one of the easiest home-made snacks in Myanmar but most of the households in Myanmar rarely make it at home. The ingredients are rice flour, oil, a piece of calcium,cow-pea,salt, roasted sesame powder and shredded coconut. Burmese usually eat this snack in the afternoon after they have lunch.
  4. Nan Gyi Thohk. City folks usually have it as breakfast with hot coffee. Nan gyi Thohk is the rice noodle salad and also known as the spaghetti of Myanmar. The dish is made up of rice noodle by mixing prepared chicken curry. People often add onions, well-boiled egg and lime or lemon. Though it is morning snack, people can have it anytime.

I believe that one of the best ways to embrace another culture is trying traditional food. Local food is delicious, affordable, inexpensive as well as nutritious. If you visit Myanmar, don’t miss a chance to try the traditional food I mentioned earlier. Believe me, it will be worth it.

Breaking the Stereotype

“Hot chocolate and mint” is a virtual diary or blog written by Diana Rikasari since 2007. She shares her daily outfits, house decorations, thoughts, daily life, and many more. Now she has two brands, which named IWEARUP and Schmiley Mo. She also wrote books and even has a wax statue of her in Switzerland!

Her style is known as playful and colorful, wearing different patterns and colors at the same time and not forgetting her accessories such as big sunglasses and platform boots, sometimes fury hat if she may. Maybe it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it sure is gives you happiness if you see her page that is filled with her outfit of the day. She also does recycle and wear it as a statement item, using leftover pieces or old scraps into a brand-new fresh-looking bag, hat, and other accessories. Her multicolor outfits are not just for certain events or activities, even when hiking she also wear colorful outfit, less accessories of course.

Diana’s fashion statement has taught us that life is too short to fulfill other’s dream and to think about what other people think, her determination brings her to success in life while doing what she truly love. Most people might not be confident going out wearing outfits like Diana does. But Diana nailed it ever since 2007, when “Social media influencers” were not a thing. She’s focused on what she love the most and loving herself genuinely. In one of her blog posts, she said “It does not matter if other people don’t care. Because our achievements are for our own sake – to mark our own milestones, and move on. It is the people you love who matters the most. To make them proud and happy. If they are happy for you, then that means more than anything else.” And what Diana do is just look for what makes her happy. What she wears makes her happy and confident, and look where it brings her to? So many achievements. Being able to inspire people to be themselves and wear what makes them happy and sell her own products and write books. In one of her interview, she also being asked on ‘how do you manage to still look cool or not care when people stare at you from top to bottom because of the unique outfits you wear?’ and her she mentioned that fashion is a personal choice so everyone has the right to feel comfortable in their own unique ways.

Amazing Benefits of Hearing Classical Music

Perspective Monday, 30 November 2020

Who doesn’t know Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, J.S Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, and many of the greatest classical music composers? Most of us immediately reminded of them when someone is talking about classical music, considering their role as a classical music composer. Many people especially the teenagers in this generation, believe that classical music is for the old and elite because we often hear classical music played at our grandparent’s houses as they fall asleep in their recliners. Even though, the sounds of classical music we listen to can have a calming effect and help control attention, learning, and emotional responses. Listening to classical music can also lower your body’s stress response and result in an overall happier mood.

Over the centuries, classical music has transformed itself into building blocks, setting the framework for all kinds of musicians today. Many studies even show that music, especially learning or listening to classical music can have a variety of extraordinary benefits for our bodies.

  1. Boost Memory

According to a new study, listening to classical music especially to Mozart repertoire can give your brain a boost, specifically to improve your memory. Mozart’s repertoire consists of a beat speed of approximately 60 beats/minute. This speed can stimulate the works of the left and right sides of the brain, therefore the works of the brain could accept many of the information.

  1. Decrease Blood Pressure

Some study stated that the calming effects on classical music on the brain could stimulate the productions of nitrous oxide (NO), which can improve physiological and psychological health and can help reduce anxiety, stress, depression, that could lead us to hypertension.

  1. Makes you smarter

Some studies suggest that listening to classical music is believed to improve the brain’s spatial and cognitive understanding of how information can fit into space. Classical music is also believed to create a more relaxed and focused environment that makes our brains conducive to thinking.

Besides the beautiful harmony of its music, classical music has lots of benefits for our health. By listening to classical music, it could help us reduce or relieves the stress, anxiety, and the most important thing, listening to classical music could organize our heart and mind, so we will feel more stable emotionally so that we could avoid depression. There are many repertoires that the composer made, so we are all having many references to hear our preference in classical music.

Breaking the Stigma of “Teladan”

Perspective Monday, 30 November 2020

SMA Negeri 1 Yogyakarta, well known as Teladan, is one of Indonesia’s famous high schools. Many of its alumni are now being important figures in Indonesia. One of them is Paku Alam X. There is also a well-known and controversial minister, Susi Pudjiastuti. Even though she only attended school for two years.

Teladan is also well-known for its outstanding students. Every year, the students regularly win medals at the national science olympiad and research. Moreover, almost 2 out of 3 of their students got accepted in UGM annually as well as in other top universities. Besides all of their glorious achievements, Teladan has also drawn controversy. Especially regarding its regulations and culture.

This school is known for its strong Islamic influence. Because of that, they are often accused of spreading radicalism. As a result, people would think twice before entering this school. Those rumors are completely wrong. Those rumors were caused by misunderstanding.

It all happened because people misunderstood the school culture. So, Teladan have

Six cultures called Teladan cultures which was “implanted” since the orientation. One of the orientation programs is Keteladanan, which aims to make the new students become an example of good people to society.

Those six cultures are:

  1. Religious
  2. Tolerant
  3. Having responsibility
  4. Ethics
  5. Trustworthy
  6. 6S

In that context, religious means practicing the order of our religion properly. As a result, it’s applied to every school’s activity and rules. But, no rule requires Muslim students to wear the headscarf. It’s their choice to wear headscarf or not, but if they decided to wear the headscarf, they must wear it as the sharia. What makes Islamic culture looks more outstanding rather than the other is that most students are Muslim. In fact, the religious term is applied in every religion in the school.

One of the most controversial yet famous things about the school is “Women and men must use separate stairs.” This controversy happens because of misunderstandings. In fact, the stairs are separated because there is a stair that leads to the women’s partial ablution place. In Islam, some part of a women’s body is not allowed to be seen by man. It includes the feet. It is separated so the man can’t see those body parts.

“It’s such a waste if people give up their intention to get education in SMA Negeri 1 Yogyakarta just because of those nonsense rumors,” said Lathifah, the alumnus. “Because this school will not only give you academic lessons, but also provide you to build a strong character. It is hard to find this kind of public school these days. It might be hard at first, but you will find a comfort zone in its uniqueness.”

BioskopOnline.ID, An Alternative for Indonesian Movie Lovers and The Film Industry

Perspective Monday, 30 November 2020

Who doesn’t like to watch movies? Movies have made our lives better by creating stories that make us cry, laugh, and happy. Eversince the pandemic, people have been stuck in their homes to self quarantine. One of the choices of activities that can be done while in quarantine are watching movies. Online streaming services have gained popularity ever since people are stuck at home. The existence of online streaming services like netflix, hulu, amazon prime, apple tv, and Disney+ have made people’s lives enjoyable as they have accompanied people through their self quarantine times.

On the other hand, because of the increasing numbers of users in the online streaming services and the closing of many public areas including cinemas due to the social restriction policy, the film industry in Indonesia has had a devastating impact on the pandemic. The social restrictions policy has put film releases, film production, and film distribution on hold. With that being in effect, many producers, crew, and actors in the film industry community have no income and resources to resume their work. One of the well known Indonesian film producers, Chand Parwez Servia, who owns StarVision Plus, said in an interview with TribunNews.com that many of the people in the film industry community are now living with no income and are struggling to survive through this pandemic. According to Budi Irawanto, a lecturer at the Communication Science Department at Universitas Gadjah Mada, the loss that the film industry is taking due to this pandemic reaches across 200 billion rupiahs per month.

A lot of effort has been done by certain people from the film industry to help its community bounce back and survive through this pandemic. Many people are involved in opening charity and donating boxes to help those in the film industry community who are struggling in this pandemic. But, the film industry could not rely only from donations and charities. Somehow, they have to find new ways to create income and produce money in this pandemic.

Many of the film production companies are taking the online streaming services as an alternative to make money. For instance, production companies like MILES Films, Falcon Pictures, Visinema Pictures, and Base Entertainment have established cooperations with Netflix to release some of their films into the online streaming service. With major film production companies starting to take over the online streaming services, viewers now get the chance to watch many memorable films from Indonesian filmmakers. For example, the film ‘Petualangan Sherina’ has made viewers reminisce about their childhood memories by seeing the film. It’s now available on Netflix and Disney+ for everybody to watch.

On the other hand, many underrated films from Indonesian filmmakers do not have the privilege to put their films in mainstream online streaming services like Netflix. Many film enthusiasts in Indonesia are trying to demand award-winning films that are not available on any mainstream online streaming platforms. For example, people are starting to search for films like ‘Siti’, ‘Keluarga Cemara’, and many more. People are starting to demand Indonesian based legal streaming services that could provide them with varieties of films from Indonesian filmmakers because of the limited access to such films.

On 6th July 2020, many Indonesian film enthusiasts were indulged with the best of award-winning Indonesian movies with the release of BioskopOnline.id. BioskopOnline.id are providing affordable access to many award-winning films. Users just need to pay around five thousand to fifteen thousand rupiahs to watch films from award-winning filmmakers. It is easy to access the film since there’s no need to pay a monthly subscription as it only requires viewers to pay for the films they want to watch. Viewers could pay for the film with e-wallet platforms like Gopay, Dana, OVO, and many more.

In my opinion, online streaming services like BioskopOnline.id can help the film industry bounce back from it’s loss due to the pandemic. With easy access to films that is highly demanded by many film enthusiasts, the opportunity for filmmakers to make money from the streaming service is higher. Also, many award-winning movies that were previously inaccessible for viewers online, could be another attraction to the website. The site itself could be an alternative for both the audience to watch movies and filmmakers to make money.

Welcoming the Era of Dressing in Comfort

Perspective Monday, 30 November 2020

When it comes to millennials and Gen Zers, they never skip a beat when it comes to fashion. Their nature as always on the go generation creates a high demand for fashion-forward activewear garments that lets them get their priorities straight while still maintaining “drip”. I’ll take running errands while sipping mimosas all while being in my sweatpants and hoodies any day of the week. It is simply not an option to give up on style, so athleisure is here to give us both fashion and function every day in the trendiest wearable way.

Activewear is a trend of clothes designed for athletic uses but worn for purposes such as work, schools, or events. But athleisure itself refers to athletic apparel that can be worn in non-athletic settings. The most common pieces of athleisure come in forms like leggings, tights, sweatpants, yoga pants, shorts, sports bras, hoodies, sneakers, and many more. It symbolizes a new take on sportswear to an instantly enhanced everyday outfit you can throw on in under 5 minutes. The rise of this trend is mainly contributed by the rapid growth of startup companies and workplaces, slowly diminishing strict and formal dress codes. They can provide comfortability through outfits that are more lightweight and breathable while giving the solutions to provide a hub for urban and sports trends to freely influence their shapes.

Many iconic athleisure movements come from the 90s. The notorious Juicy Couture tracksuits in many daring colors give more of a blend on-trend silhouette while still providing that extra fit and comfort. If you crave walking around in Paris Hilton style, it’s your official time to shine. Sueded fleece fabrications will give you performance wear that feels like cashmere. Try a cross-functionating loungewear look by pairing it with some sneakers or heels. Neo-materials such as holographic foil, reflective colors, and pearlized iridescent finishes also look stunning as a statement piece. The key here is to layer futuristic outerwear over extenuating body-conforming pieces. If layering isn’t your style, then breathable cropped silhouettes could be your Indonesian 36 degrees weather best friend. The use of retro color palettes also comes to play when mentioning old school gym classes in the West. You will see more neon yellows and bright purples making a comeback over the years.

Athleisure accessibility in breaking through mass markets like never before means this industry is saturated yet growing. Fast fashion brands such as H&M and Uniqlo are riding the wave by releasing sportswear lines at an affordable price tag. This mass adoption within the industry is slowly trickling down into pop-culture, further demonstrating the influence of athleisure in the mainstream media. Other brands are also focusing on creating different cuts that are acceptable in the workplace in hopes of carrying other generations to join this activewear bandwagon. While some brands targets to embrace the inclusivity of real women’s bodies by securing client’s hearts through pieces in various sizing and colors to match all skin tones.

Although the athleisure trend is. It has found its way into many of our wardrobes and influences the way we look at fashion trends. Athleisure blurs the lines between the clothes you would wear to the gym and those you would wear to lunch by converting performance wear into regular wear. With many adopting this look, it proves that people are starting to have more options to stay relaxed while still looking put together. Its simplicity and practicality hope to continue to appeal outside the realm of sports, but for general daytime and travel.

Is This the Comeback of Boxing?

Perspective Monday, 30 November 2020

(KSI VS LOGAN PAUL 2, Photo taken from ESPN)

We definitely know what boxing is, the combat sport that consists of two people fighting to win or eventually knock the opponent out. Throughout the years boxing has been one of the most entertaining sports. It can involve a small amount of audience or maybe none until a full packed stadium with less breathing space. Boxing is not only about the fight, but it is also about the hype. The dedication given and the intense drama created before two fighters meet on the ring is what makes this sport beautiful.

Throughout time we have a lot of ring champions, starting from ‘The Greatest’ Muhammad Ali until best of today’s era Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather. The legacy they left made this sport look amazing in the public eye. However, boxing is now dying. There are less audiences and people that are attracted to this combat sport. One of the factors that made boxing diminished is that combat sport has developed to many branches such as MMA or the UFC.

YOUTUBE BOXING, The New Branch of Boxing?

In 2018, there was a shocking move from the Youtube world. KSI, one of the most subscribed English Youtubers, challenged Joe Weller, who is also an English Youtuber, to a boxing fight. It started from a personal argument which then resulted in an amateur boxing fight between those two Youtbers that took place in a sold out O2 Arena, London. The result was KSI’s victory and he then challenged one of the most subscribed American Youtubers, Logan Paul. The event took place 4 months after KSI’s first amateur boxing match victory in a sold out Manchester Arena and resulted in a draw. A year later the rematch was held as a professional boxing fight. This became a huge controversy in the boxing world. Not only that, the fact that the event was promoted by the finest boxing promoter today, Eddie Hearn, made this event look even more stupid in the eyes of pure boxing fans. The fight resulted in KSI’s first pro-boxing victory defeating Logan Paul in his own backyard in a sold out Staples Center, Los Angeles.

Is This A Good Way To Bring Back Boxing To Life?

To a pure boxing fans eye, this is a complete joke. This is a complete time-wasting event in boxing fans’ eyes. It made it even worse when they put the fight for the world champion as a co-main event and put a professional debut that only held 6 rounds in a main event, fighting in a sold out staples center. It also became a boomerang effect towards their promoter, Eddie Hearn. He is known as the boxing promoter which promotes world title fights such as Anthony Joshua’s fight, who battles for the heavyweight title of the world. A lot of boxing fans and non-boxing fans think that Eddie Hearn is there to make millions and that he does not care about the image of boxing.

On the other hand, this new branding of boxing could increase the audience from different glasses. KSI and Logan Paul both have a high number of fans and subscribers. Therefore, it opens the opportunity for their fans or subscribers to expose themselves to boxing. It may also become a motivation for people to start training in boxing. In the long run, this could lead to the comeback of boxing.

Gentlemen Should Know How to Suit Up

Perspective Monday, 30 November 2020

For most men, dressing is not really a crucial matter. But fact says that appearance of a business man can influence a successful business agreement. Wearing a perfect fitted suit can increase our attractiveness. In this article, there are some tips that you may need on how to wear suit. These tips are established from fashion trends and formal attire guides. From past centuries, suit has already become a gentleman attire. A lot of men from all around the world use it as a basic formal dress code or sometimes they even use it daily. In country like Indonesia, suit can be needed by men for certain events. Most of us do not use it as a daily clothe like men in England for example. However, to become fashionable, firstly we must understand how to choose and wear the right suit.

First thing first, pick the right type of suit you want to wear for an event. Wrong type of suit can mismatch the event dress code. Types of suit are qualified by the fabric, button amount, lapel models, and suit tails. Dress codes are different for different events like cocktail party, formal meeting, gala, funeral, and informal meeting. Starting with the color, suit color should match the belt and shoe colors, black shoes can match all suit colors, but brown shoes cannot go with black suits. And for the belt, it should be in the same color as the shoes. If you want to look more formal, use dark suit colors combined with light color shirt such as white, it will create a serious impression. And fabric type actually depends on the weather we are in. Wool fabrics can be used in all seasons, flannel is for winter only whereas linen is for summer. Cotton can be used for all seasons except winter.

How to dress dapper in the modern age [Digital image]. (n.d.). Retrieved 2020, from https://www.custommade.com/l/how-to-dress-dapper-in-the-modern-age/

Moving on to dos and don’ts, common mistake usually occurs when we button up the suit. If the suit has more than one button, the lowest button should never be buttoned. And open all buttons every time you are going to sit. Another common mistake is when choosing the right tie, tie size should be the same as that of the suit lapel and shirt collar size. Avoid too big or too small tie to wear. Also, if you want to put a handkerchief in your suit pocket, try to match it with the tie color or pattern. Lastly, the tie color is supposed to be darker than your shirt color.

Hanh, G. (2019). [Digital image]. Retrieved 2020, from https://georgehahn.com/the-proportions-of-shirt-collar-tie-and-lapel-widths/

Fitting is also very important. Finding the perfect-fitted suit in stores for you can be hard. I recommend tailor-made suits if you want to look more fashionable. Usually tailor will arrange two times fitting before finishing your suit because it is not easy to find the best fit for you. The correct jacket sleeve length is when the shirt sleeve tag end can be visible. For the waist measurement, you may choose something neither too tight nor too loose.

Conteno, A. (2016). [Digital image]. Retrieved 2020, from https://www.realmenrealstyle.com/suit-fit-quick-guide-vdo/

Overall, I conclude, there are some efforts needed to be fashionable. A good appearance reflects a good personality. Gaining respect is mainly from our behaviour, but if you want to be respected and listened, you can start with your appearance. I cannot deny, I often have my first impression in someone by looking at the way he/she dresses. Thus, as long as you have an opportunity to look nice, use it!

Mulan Star Receives Backlash

Perspective Monday, 30 November 2020

I bet you all have seen the animated and original version of Mulan. The new Mulan  movie came out on March 25th of 2020 in the Disney Plus platform. Produced by Walt Disney  Pictures, this movie took Niki Caro as the director of this movie. Fans of the original Mulan  movie have waited and is excited for this movie since a year ago when the first trailer came  out. But just a couple of days after it came out, people start to find peculiar posts on Liu YiFei,  the actress of Mulan’s posts. Small aspects in a movie could still ruin a whole movie. In this  case the main actress is the reason this movie is ruined.

Fans found out that the star Mulan, Liu YiFei showed her support in Hong Kong police brutality. It was posted in Liu YiFei’s a social media account alike Twitter in August 2019. The caption was written in Mandarin, “I support the Hong Kong police. You can all attack me now. What a shame for Hong Kong” wrote Liu YiFei translated from Mandarin. #BoycottMulan backlash trended on twitter in the United States also in Hong Kong.

People are fast to assume that the post was supporting police brutality in Hong Kong. As we  all know about the pro – democracy protest and the police brutality violence that occurred in Hong Kong. One of a twitter user account, Nardia  Huang wrote “She (Liu YiFei) supports the brutality of Hong Kong Police for beating up  people” plus the #BoycottMulan.

Mulan, a movie against unfair suppression and discrimination is contradicting to Liu  YiFei’s post if it is certain that sh supports the police brutality. It is known that Disney is  developing various of diversity in the movies they produce. Such as Mulan, Pocahontas, Tiana and more. But the entertainment world still lacks diversity. The actress used in the movie Mulan  are majority Chinese – American and the workers and creators behind the movie are mostly  white Americans. There is still diversity absence in the huge movie industry in America. We  need support more international and diverse productions and also movies that exhibits  diversity.

The movie Mulan receives backlash after the main actress, Liu YiFei was assumed to  support police brutality in Hong Kong. People relates this to how the production team are white  and did not use real Chinese actors. In 2020, the world develops and equality is more reachable.  It is time for the movie industry, especially in America uses more diverse talents.
