This book exposes Curriculum of Undergraduate Program of the Department of Communication Science (DIKOM) UGM, especially in regular undergraduate program. Curriculum of 2021 is an improvement from the prior curriculum, that is Curriculum of 2016. The curriculum of 2021 is ready to be implemented in the academic year of 2021/2022 until the academic year of 2025/2026.
The basis of the design of this curriculum is based on the Strategic Plan (Renstra) DIKOM. According to Renstra, the vision of DIKOM is to be a reputable communication education institution that is critical, creative, ethical, internationally reputable as well as taking a role and crafting a well informed society in 2025. In general, the curriculum structure of 2021 DIKOM UGM will be used for 8 semesters with a target of 144 credits. This structure consists of Compulsory and Elective Courses. In semester I to semester III, students take compulsory course packages. This course is a compulsory course at the university, faculty and department levels.
The Curriculum of 2021 amends the prior curriculum structure that divides the subject of concentration into four interests: journalism, entertainment media, advertising, and public relations. Based on the studies conducted, these four concentrations are no longer relevant. Therefore, the study program decided to have two concentrations in curriculum 2021, namely Creative Media & Journalism; and Strategic Communication. In semester IV, students are given the opportunity to choose 1 concertation out of 2 concertations by taking a compulsory concentration course. For example, students who choose Strategic Communication as the major concentration will study courses in the field of advertising and public relations.
In the third year, in addition to taking elective courses, students also get the opportunity to participate in the Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MKBKM). In semester 6, students are directed to start designing their undergraduate thesis by taking a thesis proposal. This helps students to complete their study on time. Furthermore, students are expected to complete the thesis in semester VII or semester VIII with a maximum study period until semester X.
