The Postgraduate Program of Communication Science at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) was established to respond to scientific developments due to the penetration of information and communication technology (ICT) as well as the socio-political dynamics in post-reform Indonesia, which made a number of policies on freedom of information and news.

The Postgraduate Program of Communication Science that was established in 2005 develops a learning program in three concentrations of studies (concentration of communication science and media, concentration of management communication, and concentration of communication policy) to equip students to be able to face the challenges and dynamics that occur in the future.

Vision of Study Program

The formulation of the vision of the Faculty of Social and Political Science is to create a faculty that has an “international reputation that is capable of promoting the nation’s progress towards Indonesia as a developed country by 2050.” The substance of this vision is condensed through a statement that holds a commitment which says, “Committed to Science for Better Society”.

In line with the vision of the faculty, the Postgraduate Program of Communication Science provides further specifications that are adjusted to the basis of scientific competence managed by the study program, namely “Crafting Well-informed Society.” In other words, in the study program level, “a better society” is translated into “a well-informed society,” that is the creation of a society that is equipped with information with certain quality and sufficient.

In its manifestation, the vision summarizes the three dimensions of Tri Dharma of higher education. Hence, the efforts to build and actualize “a well-informed society” are translated into the process of teaching, research, and community service. In accordance with the area of study, the Postgraduate Program of Communication Science emphasizes on the areas of teaching, research, and community service which are particularly directed to the three concentrations: Communication Science and Media, Communication Management, and Communication Policy.

Mision of the Study Program

  • Implementation of teaching is strived to meet international standards on the basis of materials or on quality teaching materials.
  • Conducting research that is strived to meet international quality standards which can also be used as teaching materials.
  • Implementation of community service based on quality research results, such as media literacy programs and the media democratization movement.
  • Establishment of international cooperation as a way to benchmark for improving the quality of teaching and research.

Objective of the Study Program

  • Generate graduates who have social and professional insights so that they are able to adapt to the latest developments in society, in line with the growth of the information society.
  • Generate reliable graduates who have good research skills that have implications in the professional world in the fields of communication, policy and academics.
  • Equip graduates with ethical guidelines, theoretical and professional insights in the field of communication.

The general profile of graduates from the Postgraduate Program of Communication Science:

  1. Generate graduates who are virtuous, able to develop and apply human values in accordance with the visions, missions and objectives of education at Universitas Gadjah Mada.
  2. Generate graduates with theoretical and analytical skills in the field of communication science.
  3. Generate responsive and adaptive graduates regarding the changes in the dynamics of communication and the development of information and communication technology.
  4. Generate graduates with research abilities in the field of communication science.

In order to provide special characteristics for students, the learning outcomes for the Postgraduate Program of Communication Science are designed to produce graduates with special competencies, namely:

  1. Building the ability to construct a communication policy model that optimizes the achievement of ideal values in a communication policy, which are democracy, justice, and strong public orientation;
  2. Have the ability to read, dissect, and formulate social problems and phenomena in their interconnection with the communication arena and seek alternative solutions through criticism, awareness, and social transformation activities;
  3. Have comprehensive understanding of scientific communication concepts and methodologies in various paradigms;
  4. Have the understanding and ability to apply theoretical aspects of communication, master information and communication technology and be able to manage communication human resource development programs within the company and can audit the implementation of communications related to strategic communication and media.
